these small black paintings—the Icaro Series—came before I fully understood where the larger Pisces series was leading. They simply appeared. Persistent. Important for reasons I couldn’t yet explain.
 
geometric forms, symbols, fragments, and entire worlds existing all at once.
 
i began calling them Icaros because they felt like visual songs or transmissions.
 
in Amazonian traditions, amongst the Shipibo people, icaros are healing songs sung by shamans.
 
though I wasn't trying to directly illustrate any one thing, some people have told me these paintings resemble visions seen during ayahuasca ceremonies.
 
For me, they emerged from a period of trying to understand myself more clearly. Maybe that’s what rituals and ceremonies are for in the first place.
